Inside the workflow
Use the border your company already trusts—even when the next plat needs a different sheet length or drawing scale.
Automatic Borders & Title Blocks begins with the surveyor's own AutoCAD border and title-block entities. Setup records the real paper size, printable margins, fixed title-block side, and the straight horizontal and vertical rails that may be lengthened or shortened. BORDER creates a protected 1:1 master, preserves the selected native appearance, and uses that captured design to prepare exact standard sheets or another compatible custom size without making the surveyor rebuild the border. Its north-aware arrow tools keep drawing north and sheet orientation separate: the border stays readable to the view while the linked north arrow follows the stored drawing-north direction.
What that means on a drawing
A subdivision plat needs a sheet longer than the company's normal 24 x 36 border for a roll printer. The surveyor chooses the company style, enters the custom paper dimensions and margins, and previews the result. BORDER keeps the title block, logo, text, symbols, lineweights, and fixed cells at their designed size while extending the approved straight rails to the new printable length. In model space it appears at the active annotation scale; in paper space the same sheet is inserted 1:1. If the model view or a linked paper-space viewport is rotated, the border remains upright while the north arrow maintains the drawing-north direction for that view.
Detailed capabilities
- Captures selected company-owned lines, polylines, title-block content, attributes, logos, text, hatches, and other supported native AutoCAD entities without overwriting the source drawing.
- Uniformly normalizes the captured sheet to a protected 1:1 paper master; nonuniform normalization is stopped rather than distorting the original design.
- Supports multiple named border styles and multiple paper masters for each style. Recapturing the same name creates a new active revision while retaining the prior master for drawings already using it.
- Reads available AutoCAD plotter and printer media, physical sheet dimensions, and reported nonprintable margins while skipping an unusable driver form without hiding the remaining choices.
- Allows a manual custom paper size and margins for roll-paper and unusual plat dimensions.
- Selects an exact printable-area master first; otherwise selects the nearest compatible master whose surveyor-approved resizing range contains the requested paper.
- Changes only the approved straight horizontal and vertical rails. Content wholly beyond a cut moves with its anchored title-block region; fixed text, logos, hatches, curves, symbols, and title-block cells are not stretched or deformed.
- Provides an interactive footprint preview before the surveyor chooses the insertion point.
- Inserts an annotative model-space border at block scale 1 and retains only the active annotation representation so a later scale change does not leave overlapping border sizes.
- Inserts a nonannotative paper-space border at true 1:1. When a layout contains viewports, the surveyor can select which viewport controls the title-block scale and graphic bar-scale values.
- Keeps a complete model-space border sheet-upright while a separate annotative north arrow remains aligned with the stored drawing-north direction as the model view is twisted.
- Links each paper-space north arrow to one selected viewport and adjusts the arrow for that viewport's view direction and twist without rotating or editing the viewport or border.
- Uses WCS +Y as drawing north by default or lets the surveyor define drawing north with two picked points that are resolved and stored in WCS.
- Provides three built-in north-arrow styles and can capture the surveyor's own arrow appearance as a protected, normalized 1:1 style without overwriting the source drawing.
- Preserves an existing north arrow and requests an explicit relink when a copied or moved paper-space arrow no longer has one unambiguous controlling viewport.
- Updates recognized county, district, drawing-scale, bar-scale title, and bar-distance attributes while leaving unrecognized company title-block fields under the surveyor's control.
- Uses validated West Virginia drawing-location context when available and can perform its own point-based MapWV county/district lookup without requiring GIS or LABEL to be installed.
- Refreshes only BORDER-created references recorded in the DWG's compact registry; it does not search model space or layouts for unrelated customer blocks.
- Preserves native layers, colors, linetypes, and lineweight behavior inside the generated editable AutoCAD block definition.
- Leaves an inserted border in place if its private template later becomes unavailable, and never automatically recreates a border the surveyor deletes or explodes.
How the surveyor uses it
- Open a company border/template drawing and choose the border style, template name, actual source paper, and plotter margins.
- Select the border and title-block entities, identify the complete drawn paper rectangle, and mark the straight vertical and horizontal rail cuts that may safely change length.
- Set the approved printable-width and printable-height range; BORDER creates the protected 1:1 master without replacing the source drawing.
- In the project drawing, choose the company style and an AutoCAD plotter form or custom roll-paper size.
- Review the interactive footprint, choose the insertion point, and—when working in paper space—select the viewport that controls scale fields.
- Choose a built-in or captured company north-arrow style, use WCS +Y or pick the drawing-north direction, and link a paper-space arrow to its controlling viewport.
- Use the resulting native AutoCAD block normally. When the applicable model annotation scale or paper-space viewport scale changes, refresh updates the managed scale and bar-scale fields and the model-space representation.
BORDER automates presentation from the surveyor's own approved template. It does not redesign the title block, alter survey geometry, treat county or district lookup as boundary evidence, or stretch fixed title-block content. North-arrow rotation follows the drawing-north direction stored in the DWG; it does not independently establish the survey's bearing basis. A custom size must remain within the chosen template's approved straight-rail range and the plotter's printable limits. This source preview has passed its build and deterministic regression checks but still requires the documented live AutoCAD acceptance workflow before release.
